The Ultimate New Orleans Weekend

Description:

There’s so much to see and do in New Orleans, it's impossible to pack it all into one weekend, but if one weekend is all you’ve got, here’s how to make the most of it. Spend one day in the French Quarter and one day Uptown. Try to hit some of the excellent fine dining restaurants as well as the more casual places with authentic New Orleans fare. Have a wild night on the tacky but fun Bourbon Street then have a night listening to live jazz or a brass band at one of the many New Orleans music venues. And remember, wherever you go, you can go there with a drink in your hand. This is the ultimate New Orleans weekend, after all!

Day 1 - New Orleans

Take the St Charles Streetcar to the Garden District. You may want to get off at Jackson then walk down Prytania Avenue towards Lafayette Cemetery. Be sure to go early! The cemetery closes at noon on Saturdays (and is not open on Sundays.) Have a five-star lunch at the famous Commander's Palace, or get a po-boy at Ignatius or the Magazine Street Po-Boy Shop. Make your way down Magazine Street, dipping into the various shops, cafes, and bars along the way. Hop back on the streetcar and ride all the way uptown to Audubon Park, across from the beautiful Tulane and Loyola campuses. After a walk in the park and a stroll past all the beautiful uptown mansions, have dinner at Dick and Jenny’s then a mint julep on the porch at the Column’s Hotel. At night, catch some live music at Tipitina’s or the Maple Leaf. Check the New Orleans magazine, The Gambit, to see what bands are playing at the various venues.

Day 2 - New Orleans

After coffee and beignets at Café du Monde, get your French Quarter bearings by taking the Le Monde Creole tour. This will give you some historical background of the French Quarter, as well as take you around to some important sights, such as St. Louis Cemetery Number One. Have lunch in the beautiful Café Amelie courtyard then stroll down Royal Street and through Jackson Square to watch the street performers. Stop into the St. Louis Cathedral then buy some souvenirs at the French Market. Have dinner at historic and haunted Muriel’s before heading to Bourbon Street for a wild New Orleans night. Drink a hurricane by the Pat O’Brien’s fire fountain, and when you’ve got your liquid courage, sing karaoke at the Cat’s Meow. When you want to sit down, Fritzel's is the perfect place to relax and hear live jazz. You have to buy one cocktail per set, but it's worth it to hear great musical talent in an intimate setting.
