    • Any place in New York that has an actual mechanical bull, which Johnny Utah's does and is open for the public to ride, has to be labeled kitsch. But there is nothing kitschy about the barbecue here. Despite the mechanical bull and the fact that you are right across from Rockefeller Center, this is the best Texas cowboy cuisine you will find in Midtown. Keep it simple when ordering; the smoked chorizo with pickled okra, served with plain saltine crackers makes a good accompaniment to a cold beer or spicy margarita. Since this is cowboy cuisine, it's hard to resist the Texas brisket. Here it's sliced thin, the meat perfectly tender, and served dry with a side of rice and red-eye gravy. If you prefer your barbecue from the pig, the mountain of smoked pork spareribs with a house barbecue sauce and coleslaw will keep you happily occupied. If you can find room after all that, the banana pudding with Nilla wafers is a filling end to a substantial meal. Johnny Utah's is big and loud -- exactly the way a cowboy place should be.
