Description:
After much anticipation, chef Kerry Heffernan's (formerly of 11 Madison Park) new restaurant, in the recently renovated Jumeirah Essex House, debuted in 2008. Though the grandeur of the chef's former space has been replaced by a sleek, open dining room with bright mirrors, off-white banquettes, a huge walk in wine cellar, and a roaring fireplace, Heffernan's menu is, thankfully, less excessive. In fact, it's a rather small, uncomplicated menu, but what is on it, Heffernan does superbly. The flash-seared calamari with cauliflower custard in a lobster-coriander sauce is a unique, unfussy appetizer. The cannelloni of kabocha squash and ricotta entree is a keeper, while the spice-roasted cod layered on mustard greens is paired perfectly with a few slices of smoky linguica and Manila clams. For dessert, the choices in chocolate -- the chocolate caramel tart or the chocolate Pot de Crème -- make it hard to order anything else.
