Description:
- Riverside Park Tunnel, or the Amtrak/ Freedom tunnel runs under the Riverside ParK. The property of New York Central Railroad part of which belonged to Vanderbilt's railroad empire in 19th century. The railroad that ran north and south was covered with a steel and concrete structure. The tunnel has not been in use since 1950s and is said to have been the home of the homeless also called the mole people. A theory that was immortalized by the books: The Tunnel, The Mole People etc. The tracks were cleaned when Amtrak bought the tunnel and rail and the 'mole community' stopped thriving.
