- For years a bleak and depressing cavern, the building where four major subway lines terminate was rebuilt in the late '90s to create a magnificent glass-roofed space, reminiscent of Europe's great rail terminals. The station stands just across the street from Coney Island's amusement area, making it a gateway to the ambitiously planned renewal of New York's most celebrated amusement park. A notable plus is a glass wall created by the famed theatre designer (EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH, et al) Robert Wilson. The sinuously curving wall near the Surf Avenue entrance incorporates intriguingly stylized images of Coney Island figures through history. Nearby landmarks include the Boardwalk, Nathan's Famous, home of the celebrated hot dogs. the Cyclone, the legendary roller-coaster, and MCU Stadium, home of the minor-league Brooklyn Cyclones and many summer concerts and special events. The retail shop, open seven days a week, sells Brooklyn Dodgers memorabilia as well as Cyclones merchandise. Always an entertaining excursion.
