Everytime I'm in NY, I am usually in mid-town arriving from JFK and then headed to LI the next morning. I've never had a bad experience at Artisanal Bistro. It's French, the food is good but not too expensive, it's big so getting a rez is not mandatory, and if it's crowded and you can't get a table they'll serve you at the bar. http://www.nileguide.com/destination/new-york/restaurants/artisanal-bistro/382433

I know there are tons of great restaurants in the city, but my personal favorite spot to eat is the now-famous gyro/rice platter cart at the corner of 53rd & 6th (right across from the Hilton). Come by any time between 8pm and 4am and you'll likely be able to spot it by the long line of foodies anxiously waiting to get their platters and white sauce. Don't worry, the line moves fast!
