There are plenty of part time jobs here, it is not an issue. Waitressing, working in a store, etc. New York is full of these opportunities. The environment is fast paced, busy and full of a million things to do. You will never be bored. I would search for hostels in NYC, they are low budget and there are a bunch. New York is really expensive right now and the economy is horrible, so things are a bit pricey at the moment. Living right outside of NYC in New Jersey is about a 5-10 minute commute into the city, depending where you are and is a lot cheaper. Many people that cannot afford to live in NYC stay in Jersey. Jersey City or Hoboken are nice. Food is expensive here but if you stay away from the chain food stores your bound to find cheaper food. There are also fresh markets on the street. When looking for a place to stay, stay away from the higher street numbers...they tend to be dangerous and ghetto like, however, not all. I live on 98th Street and wouldn't go much higher.

There are quite a bit of hostels in the city and the suburbs, but if you are coming over with friends, then the best option would be to sublet an apartment from someone for the time period that you'll be here. Check out Craig's List for the number of listings there - many of the apartments there are located in Manhattan and could be rented for a pretty decent price.

I SINCERELY RECOMMEND THE YMCA ON 63RD STREET BETWEEN CENTRAL PARK WEST AND BROADWAY. IT IS A TRULY INTERNATIONAL AND DIVERSE POPULATION. THEY CATER TO STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE RESIDENTS ARE FRIENDLY AND SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES OF WHERE TO EAT AND THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND THE IS RELATIVELY SAFE. ONE BLOCK EAST IS CENTRAL PARK. ONE BLOCK WEST IS LINCOLN CENTER.
