Babcock Cobblestone House Museum

Description:

  • Farmer Jeptha Babcock built this Greek Revival-style home in 1848 out of multi-colored lake cobblestone construction, a building style unique to western New York that was popular in the early to mid-1800s. Mr. Babcock was the first postmaster of the town and later became Town Supervisor and a New York state assemblyman. The home, maintained by the Town of Somerset Historical Society, features a brick bread oven in the kitchen that was reconstructed during the restoration of the building. The home reflects what early farm life was like in western New York, as well as some excellent masonry. – Christine A. Smyczynski
