The Best of NileGuide
- The first stop on most visitors' itineraries when they come to Nice is to hit the famous Promenade des Anglais. This stretch of road follows the shoreline for past the Castle Hill (Colline du Chateau) and overlooks the Baie des Anges. The route takes about half an hour to walk and it a great way to get familiar with the culture of the city. Watch as roller skaters and cyclists wiz past and don't feel too guilty tucking into your ice cream as the evening joggers appear! You might want to bring you swimming things as the pebbled beaches (both private and public) are available for swimming and sunbathing. Fancy a break from the hustle and bustle? Then, why not head to Phare et Gigue, Nice's sea wall that heads to the lighthouse. Check out the local fisherman waiting for a bite, and if you're getting tired why not join the sunbathers on the wall. Be warned though - when the sea is rough you may get wet! The Parc du Mont Boron is another great place to head for a bit of quiet relaxation. Situated in one of the hills bordering the city the park lies above the port. It dates back to 1860 and is a popular spot for nature lovers and families. If you want to know the difference between the native Aleppo pine and the Holm oak this is the place to head. There are 11km of footpaths to explore (all signed posted for the navigationally challenged among us). While you are at the park check out the old 16th century military fort on Mont Alban. Museums worth checking out include the Musee Franciscain et Monastere de cimiez and the Musee et Site Archeologiques de Cimiez. Entry is free to the Franciscain museum. It is located in a seventeenth century building and charts the history of the Franciscan way of life from the 13th century to the present day. The archaeological museum has some amazing Roman baths dating back to the second and third centuries.
