- I love this old-fashioned train ride between Nice and Digne. Put on some casual, comfortable clothes; bring a sweater, just in case because the train will be going up quite high into the mountains following the banks of the Var River. After leaving Nice, you'll get to the Var valley where hilltop villages will start appearing on hillsides. Binoculars are nice here to get a good look at how these villages are perched on the mountains. Then will come the winding , rocking riverside tracks surrounded by high cliffs or towering peaks. You'll go through marvelous medieval villages, pass lush orchards, and and glide in narrow gorges. If you don't feel like gong all the way to Digne, stop at Entrevaux for lunch and a leisurely stroll through this fortified village, well worth a visit on its own. For house who want to go back in time, sign up for the steam engine rides on weekends. A great experience!
