- Oakland is in the East Bay, and die-hard San Franciscans have a tendency to snub it as a travel-worthy destination. It has a reputation for being sketchy and dangerous...but so do pockets of nearly every major urban center. Oakland is home to fantastic farmer's market, a lovely estuary/lake (Lake Merritt), Children's Fairy Land, regional parks with hiking and biking, charming shopping districts and a burgeoning arts scene. And I haven't even mentioned the mind-blowing restaurants yet. Or the weather (fog? what fog?). Or the prices (yes, things are more affordable in the East Bay). Or the parking. Or the... Just a short drive across the Bay Bridge, Oakland is an undiscovered, genuine slice of California. It's fiercely proud residents would love to have you.
