Oaxaca has so many history it was hard to pick just 10 sites in this Top 10 List of Historic Sites in Oaxaca. Let's keep in mind, civilizations have been present in Oaxaca and its surrounding towns for centuries, so if you like history, you came to the right place.
Of course, we couldn't have a Historic Sites List without one of the most important pre-Hispanic ruins in Mexico, Monte Alban, the Zapotec and latter, Mixtec ceremonial center. This is not only important historically, but also architecturally and artistic, since the tombs found there had examples of the most magnificent art in the pre-Hispanic world. These treasures can now be seen at the Centro Cultural Santo Domingo (also in this list).
Other pre-Hispanic sites, such as Yagul, Zaachila, Dainzu and Labiteco are great examples of these land filled with history, But is Mitla, the magically designed site, that has still wondering art experts on how and why did this ceremonial center has those magnificent graphics. I guess you'll have to find out for your self.
But after the Spaniards came and evangelized these lands, the history continued. In this case, are the Temples the ones that carry that history. The Basilica de la Soledad and Cuilapan and very different examples of the Spaniard art, but is Santo Domingo the one that will keep you wondering and wanting more.
