Description:

  • In the hot lowlands of eastern Oaxaca, an area called the isthmus, you find a different cooking tradition known as cocina istmeña. You can sample some of the region's specialties at this restaurant, located in a residential part of the Colonia Reforma. Start off with some garnachas for appetizers -- little corn patties covered in sauce -- and then try one of the regional specialties such as shrimp mole or another kind of mole called gucheguiña. It just depends on what the owner has cooked up that day. Seafood plays a big part in cocina istmeña. Usually the chef can offer guests seafood cocktails and soups. She will close occasionally, so call first. Only Spanish is spoken.
