Interesting Facts about Old Saybrook


1. Interesting Fact: In 1701, the Collegiate School -later Yale University- was founded. When Yale was being moved to New Haven in 1716 residents were so disappointed they barricaded a bridge and bludgeoned sheriffs to halt the transport of the library.

2. Intriguing Fact: In 1775 the first submarine was invented by David Bushnell. The "Turtle" resembled a wine cask, was manned by one person, propelled by a hand crank, held enough oxygen for 30 minutes and maxed out at 3 mph.

3. Captain David Newell was murdered in 1819 on his ship when his "cargo" rebelled. Newell was in the slave trade. It's rumored his house on Main Street is haunted.

4. North Cove home "Heart's Ease," was run by a wealthy lady from Hartford providing poor ladies –purportedly 'street ladies' - a rest.

5. Fun Fact: Between 1910 and 1924, the state's second largest Electric Railway originated and cost between one and five cents. It never made a profit. In the 1990s it cost a buck for a scenic 1 hour tour.

6. Cool Fact: Anna Louise James was the first African American female pharmacist in Connecticut. She ran James Gallery and Pharmacy from 1917 to 1967.

7. Random Fact: In 1985 Old Saybrook resident Denise Matthews became the first woman to graduate head of the class of a military academy –the U.S. Coast Guard.

8. Fun Fact: NBA player and member of the 2000 gold-medal winning Olympic team Vin Baker didn't make the Old Saybrook High School varsity basketball squad his freshman year.

9. Summer tourism triples the population from 10,000 to 30,000.

10. Katherine Hepburn lived in Fenwick until her death in 2003. Her daughter still lives in town.

11. Weird Fact: There is nowhere to parallel park in Old Saybrook.

12. There are over a dozen pizza joints in less than two square miles.
