First Time in Orange County

Day Note:

Welcome to the beach. It practically stretches the entire length of Orange County, so head out west in your rental car and find the area that suits you best. Huntington Beach is wide, long and buzzy; Laguna Beach smaller, more picturesque; Seal Beach especially loved by kite surfers; we could go on, but that would ruin all the fun. And when you want a break, there's an exciting mix of alternative activities to enjoy.

    Our Local Expert Says:

It's the Vatican City of Orange County - a world unto itself and an unforgettable experience for adults and children alike.

    Description:

Opened in 1955 and with the construction overseen by Walter Elias Disney himself, the Anaheim Disneyland will always be the original Magic Kingdom. Open all year round, Mickey Mouse, Snow White and friends are always in attendance to greet you and your family. The park itself is divided into a series of distinct 'realms' populated with various rides and experiences. Besides that, an itinerary of parades and a shopping district help to broaden out the experience. The hours at Disneyland change according to whichever season you're visiting in, so ensure you check the website or call before finalizing your plans - you don't want to miss out on having the insanely infectious "It's a Small World" tune running through your head.

    Description:

The seventh of the 21 California coastal missions, Mission San Juan Capistrano is continually being restored. The mix of old ruins and working buildings is home to small museum collections and various adobe rooms that are as quaint as they are interesting. The intimate mission chapel with its ornate baroque altar is still used for religious services, and the mission complex is the center of the community, hosting performing arts, children's programs, and other cultural events year-round.

This mission is best known for its swallows, which are said to return to nest each year at their favorite sanctuary. According to legend, the birds wing their way back to the mission annually on March 19, St. Joseph's Day, arriving at dawn; they are said to take flight again on October 23, after bidding the mission farewell. In reality, you'll probably see the well-fed birds here any day of the week, winter or summer.

Day Note:

Breakfast, lunch or dinner, there's something special waiting to be tried in the OC. While hamburgers and tacos are almost too easy to come by in Southern California, there are plenty of eateries that combine local influences with a local little charm and finesse (and a lot of them are on the coast, which can be oh so convenient).

Day Note:

LOCAL RECOMMENDATION: ART MUSEUMSOrange County is often seen as a home of crass commercialism and unfettered consumerism. Which can be true. But there's also a thriving local art scene (Laguna Beach and the Santa Ana Arts District particularly) orbited by some outstanding museums. Take time out to get the full picture (no pun intended).
