- This six-mile automobile drive is one of America's finest wildlife auto tours. It carries the Floridian traveler through estuaries of waist-high indigenous grasses, prime attraction for resident and migratory birdlife. The profusion of birds may be viewed from late fall into early spring. A number of pull-offs with accompanying nature trails branch off from the drive offering visitors an different wetland perspective. Summer may be too hot and buggy to leave the comforts of an air-conditioned vehicle. Binoculars and a camera are items you will not want to leave behind. This trip offers such a wide variety of bird species including the American bald eagle, soaring osprey, brilliant pink roseate spoonbills, eight species of beautiful herons and egrets, and so much more. This drive should not be hurried. Much of the birdlife stands motionless at water's edge in search of shrimp, frogs, and fish. The visitor center, located along State Route 402, offers a great preparatory lesson before heading out to the drive.
