Oslo has all types of accommodations, including hotels in all categories, hostels, vandrerhjem (meaning wanderer's homes) and pensjonat (B & Bs). In summer, pitching a tent is an interesting lodging option as well - and free.
Hostels tend to be in the city center, near the conveniently located Oslo S (Central Railway Station), while v andrerhjem are often outside the center, but easily accessible with frequent public transport. The high-end hotels are either on (or very near) main street Karl Johan or in the Holmenkollen neighbourhood at the edge of Nordmarka forest.
Oslo hotels are never dirt cheap, but during the summer holidays (mid-June to mid-August), expect to find substantial discounts, often aimed especially at family travel. Also, prices tend to be much cheaper at the weekends. A large breakfast buffet is almost always included in the price of your hotel room. Many of Oslo's hotels are committed to do their bit for the environment and several major hotels chains hold eco-certifications, including the Thon, Rica, Scandic and Choice groups of hotels.
