Description:
Built at the same time (1912) and in the same French Renaissance style as Québec City's famed Château Frontenac, the Château Laurier has long attracted royalty and celebrities to its ideal location beside the Rideau Canal at the east end of Parliament Hill. There was no stinting on materials or dimensions, as can be seen in the hotel's wide halls and acres of public lounges and lobbies. The spacious guest rooms are decorated with many Louis XV reproductions, and upper floors offer impressive views over the Ottawa River north to the Gatineau hills. A million-dollar overhaul has enhanced the dining experience in the elegant Wilfrid's, where there are terrace tables for alfresco dining in summer. This hotel looks like a fairy tale palace from afar and is delightful within. Famous photographer the late Malak Karsh lived here with his wife in the final years of his life.
