Shafali Restaurant

Description:

  • Less extravagant than many of its ethnic cousins around town, this shade of the ByWard Market culinary spectrum concentrates on what it puts on its tray (a tray that might resemble the one you brought through an elementary school cafeteria line). Butter chicken gets raves: The meat is cubed, roasted in a tandoor oven, then cooked with spices and garnished with almonds; the result is mild but flavorful. Vindaloos, on the other hand, made with vegetables, chicken, beef, lamb, or seafood, are as fiery with red-hot chiles as you'd expect. There isn't much to surprise regular fans of Indian food, but the preparation and service of the samosas, shrimp tikka, lamb masala, and so forth are more than competent; they'll even tell you what to expect -- sweet, sour, hot, or medium spicy -- before it hits the table. Lunch specials here are amazingly cost-effective, a range of combo platters lets you try multiple offers, and the house lassi (a mango-yogurt drink) is a good quaff while you leaf through the menu . . . as well as an effective fire extinguisher.
