Bytown Museum

Bytown Museum - Ottawa

  • Description:

    • Housed in Ottawa's oldest stone building (dating from 1827), this once served as the Commissariat for food and material during construction of the Rideau Canal; today, it displays the possessions of one Lieutenant-Colonel John By, the canal's builder and one of the early Ottawa's most influential citizens. Additional artifacts reflect the social history of the pioneer era of Bytown/Ottawa in three period rooms and a number of changing exhibits: In 2006, the museum featured the life and assassination of Confederation hero and original Parliamentarian Thomas D'Arcy McGee, including the first public showing of the revolver used to do the deed. The museum is beside the Ottawa Locks, between Parliament Hill and The Fairmont Château Laurier hotel.
