NileGuide Expert tip:
By day, the Market (as locals call it) offers a cheerful ambience with its stalls of fresh fruits and vegetables, and many shops offering unique crafts and souvenirs. By night the Market is Ottawa's premier nightspot.
Description:
This traditional farmers' market, established in 1826 by the ubiquitous Colonel John By, is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets; Colonel By laid out George and York streets especially widely, so as to accommodate merchants bringing in their wares and create open space for public congregation. The market's vendors sell every manner of foods, plants, flowers, and produce around a central building housing two additional floors of ware and craft boutiques. During the summer, you can also snack at some 70 indoor and outdoor stand-up counters and cafes; watch a slice of the city's life go "By" over a beer or a glass of wine. The surrounding neighborhood is a mix of rehabilitated 19th-century brick buildings and contemporary structures, where street performers and balloon artists provide mild diversion. If you're simply trolling through for picnic items, Byward Market Street is a good quick stop.
