Summer Eights - Oxford

  • Description:

    • The highlights of college rowing are 'Eights Week' in late May and the less prestigious 'Torpids' in late February. On each occasion, racing takes place over four days from just south of Donnington Bridge to the boathouses south of Folly Bridge. Commonly referred to as 'bump races' because the boats start in procession at 10-metre intervals and try to catch or 'bump' the boat in front. When this happens the boats involved in the 'bumping' stop racing until the next day when they change places. The objective is eventually to get to the front and become 'Head of the River'. Admission: free.
