The Best of NileGuide
- How to celebrate your romance amid the traffic and commerce of modern Paris? Here are ten romantic things to do that should give a rose-tinted glow to your visit to the city of light and lovers. Yes, you can have a glass of champagne at top of the Eiffel Tower, but more beautiful still is the view from Sacré Coeur. Or be more original and go up in the balloon at the Parc André-Citroën. If those are too public for you, take a picnic to the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, a vast, romantic landscape in the 19th arrondissement, and while you are on the eastern side of the city, visit the tomb of star-crossed Parisian lovers Abelard and Heloise in the cemetery of Père Lachaise. Just steps away from the crowds at the cathedral of Notre-Dame, you can find a bench to yourselves in the Square du Vert-Galant and reflect on the energetic lover Henri IV who gave his nickname to this patch of green. From here you can see the Pont des Arts whose railings are jewelled with padlocks put there by lovers from all over the world. Follow up with a visit to the Rodin Museum, where you'll find the artist's iconic sculpture, The Kiss - there's plenty of space in the museum's lovely gardens if you feel the need to practise. At the Musée de la Vie Romantique, you can go back to the time when Chopin and the writer Georges Sand were at the heart of the Romantic movement. Are you thinking of rings yet? Léchez les vitrines (literally, lick the windows) in the Place Vendôme, where you'll find jewellers Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels, among others, and top it all off with champagne in the romantic Bar Vendôme at the Ritz.
