18th Arrondissement - Montmartre
Immortalized by countless movies, the 18th arrondissement is home to the Butte Montmartre, a village on a hill with a charm unmatched in Paris. Walking through the streets of this beautiful neighborhood, you will feel that this is what Paris is supposed to look like.
At the very top of the hill, the Sacré Coeur church offers splendid views over the city, but to really enjoy the charms of Montmartre, take a stroll around Rue des Abbesses a little further down, where locals sit on the terraces of the many cafes and restaurants – such as the Deux Moulins of Amelie fame.
But there is more to the 18th arrondissement, and just a 10-minute walk away from the Sacré Coeur you will find very different but equally colorful neighborhoods. The area between Barbès and Chateau Rouge metro stations is where many of the city's North and West-African immigrants live – here you find shops selling traditional food, clothing, music CDs… you name it. The area may not be on the conventional tourists' itinerary, but if you've never had the chance to visit Abidjan, the bazaar on Boulevard Barbès and the Chateau Rouge food market are the closest Paris has to offer.
