NileGuide Expert tip:
A good place when you want a hearty and warming meal – or just have one dish
Description:
- From its riverside location on the Ile St-Louis you might imagine this to be a real tourist trap, yet it's very much also a haunt of locals who return time and again. Some who were brought by their parents as children are now bringing their own children here. There's a small terrace for summer eating, in colder weather you take your chance at one of the ancient tables inside – the décor is resolutely anti-fashion and the ambience rustic. The menu is strong on Alsatian dishes, with a matching selection of wines from that region – and a good choice of beer, too. The carte is classic: beef filet au poivre with frites, leeks vinaigrette, Baltic herring, choucroute, tarte a l'oignon and coq au riesling, For dessert choose Berthillon ice-cream, which has been made on this tiny island for more than 50 years. Oh, and did I mention the view?

A.K.A. The Oasis

Been dining here since 1968 and always make a point of revisiting whenever in Paris as it's the best place on earth for location, atmosphere, beer at the bar and cuisine a l'Alsacienne.
