Palais de Justice

Description:

  • This massive monument stretches across the entire Ile de la Cité.  Its imposing size and more than century-old towers are stylistically in keeping with the importance of this historic center of Parisian power.  The Courthouse has been the centre of power in Paris since Roman times, and was the residence of the kings of France until Charles V installed the court in the "Marais" in the 14th century. Today, visitors can watch criminal and civil court proceedings as well as visit the Conciergerie, the infamous prison that housed, at different points in history, both Marie Antoinette and Napolean.
