Have you been to the Parc de la Villette? It's more for the real Parisians than for tourists, one of the reasons it's interesting, besides being very rich in all kinds of natural as well as cultural activities. its location in one of the more multicultural areas of Paris adds another dimension to one's views of Paris. Set aside a whole day for this excursion. Easy access by metro.

Go to the Passages Couverts, old covered passages in the 2nd, 1st and 9th arrondissements. Quaint, nice old-fashioned atmosphere, lovely shops.
Also a very nice street in the 19th, rue Mouzaïa, is worth the visit, with many little "villas" (tiny streets) with tiny gardens, that were formerly inhabited by modest workers.
If you want to be a little scared, go to the Musee de la Prefecture de Police, in the 5th. It is more interesting if you understand French.
