• Type: Outdoor Recreation
  • NileGuide Expert tip:

Alta prides itself on being a no-frills ski area -NOT a resort. Be prepared to hike a lot for some of its best runs. No snowboarders allowed at Alta.

  • Description:

    • Alta sits at the tippy top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, just up from Snowbird and east of Salt Lake City. In a sea of other world class resorts, Alta definitely manages to stand out with its own unique flavor. Its trees, chutes, powdery bowls, and a few groomed runs are all sprinkled with the western Wasatch's 500+ annual inches of snowfall.

In direct contrast to Snowbird and Utah's other ski areas, Alta distinctly maintains a non-commercial atmosphere with old-school lifts, mainly rustic buildings, and plenty of nature. For those who grew up at such ski areas, this will be a great breath of fresh air; no high-speed trams, massive condominium complexes, or anything of that sort. Just plain skiing -and lots of fitness-educing hiking to get to it.

Alta has 2200 skiable acres and 2020 vertical feet of elevation gain.
