NileGuide Expert Says:
One of Salt Lake City's best, all-seasons playgrounds.
NileGuide Expert tip:
Big Cottonwood Canyon is a watershed; no dogs allowed!
Description:
- Big Cottonwood Canyon runs parallel to, and just north of, Little Cottonwood Canyon. This steep, tall, and craggy canyon stretches 14 miles eastward from the Salt Lake Valley, rising with an average grade of nearly 8%, and climbing almost 4,600 feet on its way. Were it not for winter road closures, you would be able to drive from Solitude and Brighton, up and over the mountains, and arrive at Deer Valley and Park City after just a few miles.
Big Cottonwood is a major recreation area in any season. Its two ski resorts and infinite backcountry terrain make it popular in winter; its orange, quartz cliffs attract sport and trad climbers during the late spring and early autumn. - © NileGuide2013
