Château Mouton-Rothschild

Description:

  • Thousands of tourists visit this château, 1km (2/3 mile) north of Pauillac, one of many former homes of the baron Philippe de Rothschild and his American-born wife, Pauline. Today their daughter, Philippine de Rothschild, carries on their work. The reception area is furnished with sculptures and paintings that portray wine as art. An adjoining museum, shoehorned into the former wine cellars, features 18th- and 19th-century art and objects from the Rothschild family collections, as well as a historically important 16th-century tapestry, all of which focus on the cultivation of vines. To tour the cellars, make an appointment well in advance; for a tour that does not include the cellars, call a week ahead.
