Bars and Clubs near Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang, Malaysia

  • The big hotels offer very stylish upmarket nightlife bars, but Penang is not particularly noted for its nightlife, and you need to search around to find the action. Serving decent food and drinks at surprisingly affordable prices, Farquhar's Bar in the E & O Hotel is considered by some to be the best bar you can find in Georgetown. Situated at the beginning of Jalan Penang, right in front of the historic Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Upper Penang Road is considered the center of Georgetown's nightlife. Most popular with expats and Westerners, this major party zone is filled with pubs and nightclubs that come alive with neon lights and thumping music at night, with chairs spilling out onto the pavement for drinking sessions out in the open.

One location here to try first is The Garage. Slippery Senoritas Salsa Club & Restaurant is here. It has live music/DJs from 9:30 p.m. and "ladies' nights" Wednesdays and Fridays. Soi II Unplugged Bar & Restaurant is situated next to Slippery Senoritas. This restaurant cum bar serves premium beers and is a favorite chill-out haunt of the young crowd, and it also has live-band entertainment on most nights. There is another trendy club called Fame connected to it in the courtyard. This has flamboyant live shows. Combining the exotic senses of the Middle East with a delectable twist of Mediterranean hospitality, the award-winning Momo is divided into several trendy areas with five bars located around the club.

Slightly off the happening street, Bagan is also a chic place to check out. Renowned for its live jazz-pop band, Bagan offers a cozy bungalow transformed into a dining and drinking bar. Then there is the Hong Kong Bar on Chulia Street, a famous and historically significant bar that still has a good atmosphere.
