Description:
- This is the cemetery of Penang's social elite of the ninteenth century. It was a time when life was short, frequently ravaged as it was by unsanitary living conditions plus malaria, cholera or other common tropical diseases. Francis Light was one of the earliest Englishmen to come to rest here. Others included several governors of the Settlements, including James Richardson Logan, David Brown of Glugor Estate and Reverend Hutchings. So too was Thomas Leonowens, husband of Anna of The King and I or Anna and the King fame, who passed away at age 31 in 1859, leaving his widow stranded in the East.
