  • Perth's colourful history - from many thousands of years of Aboriginal settlement, through a gold rush and now into a mining boom - leaves you with a great choice of sightseeing and other activities during your visit to the Western Australian capital city. It's a modern city with an ever-increasing number of skyscrapers and its mining background has made it relatively rich, but Perth people are some of the most laid back in the world. With more hours of sunshine than any other Australian city, Perth can't help but look inviting to visitors.

Perth is a great destination for nature-lovers, with plenty of great beaches, the Swan River for all kinds of water activities, and unique Australian animals and wildflowers to explore across the city. Having a barbecue in the magnificent Kings Park gives you a view right across the city, while visiting the Caversham Wildlife Park lets you feed a kangaroo or hold a wombat, if you're strong enough! If you feel the need to get active, take a surfing lesson or hire a surf catamaran on the river.

Perth's mild winter means you can still enjoy the outdoors whatever time of year you visit, but if you want to go indoors there are some great museums and galleries to explore. The Western Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle, for example, traces the importance of water and boating in Perth's lifestyle over the years and the Western Australian Museum in the city centre has great displays on natural history and regular special exhibitions. Make a real cultural day of it with the nearby Art Gallery of Western Australia where you'll find modern Australian paintings alongside fascinating Aboriginal art.

Close to Perth, you can also have a complete break from city life by relaxing a few days away on Rottnest Island, just a short ferry ride from the city but a real step back to vacation-style living. Alternatively, you can indulge in great food and wine in the Swan Valley region on the eastern outskirts of the city, where numerous vineyards produce excellent wine and host various festivals throughout the year.
