To get off the beaten path in Perth and find things to do just like the locals do, you usually need a bit of insider knowledge. For example, taking the evening bush walk through the Karakamia Sanctuary in the Chidlow area of the hills of Perth is something even many local Perth residents have never heard of, but it could easily be the highlight of your trip as you follow expert researchers along the track in search of nocturnal animals. Your guide will recognise rarely seen animals just by hearing a tiny rustle of leaves and you'll really be in for a treat.
Museums and galleries a little off the beaten path in Perth can also be a treat. For example, the Edward de Courcy Clarke Earth Science Museum at the University of Western Australia showcases the state's incredible mineral wealth - Perth is the ever-growing city that it is purely because of the state's metals and other raw products. The Perth Observatory is also an excellent place to visit to learn more about how we down here in Perth see the stars - it's certainly a whole lot different if you're from the northern hemisphere.
Get outside in Perth amongst the locals and you can visit relaxing places like Hyde Park, with its green walk around the lake, or Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park, where you can see kangaroos gathering at dusk. Alternatively, head off the beaten shopping path to places like New Edition Bookshop or to the fantastic shopping centre south of the river at Garden City, Booragoon, where all the newest franchises can be found.
