Barracks Archway

Description:

  • A memorial to the early settlers of Perth, Barracks Archway is one of the city's significant landmarks. The archway was part of the original military barracks built in 1863 to house the Enrolled Pensioner Guards and their families. The guards monitored the early convicts from the 1850s onwards. Their job became redundant by 1887 but the families stayed on until 1904. The barracks were demolished in 1966 with the arch the only remnant saved. Designed by Richard Jewell the archway was built by convict labour.
