Swan Valley Weekend

Swan Valley Weekend

Description:

Just east of Perth, the Swan Valley region is home to dozens and dozens of vineyards plus a few breweries and food producers, too. Spending a weekend out there makes you feel like you're far away from the city, without the big drive.

Day Note:

Start your Swan Valley weekend by dropping in to the Swan Valley Tourist Information Centre - pick up a map so you can find some hidden wineries too. There are numerous vineyards to explore but a famous one is Sandalford Wines - stay for lunch and take a stroll in the afternoon. In the evening, have a German theme - start with a drink at the Duckstein Brewery then head just down the road to Elmar's for a meal and music. A popular spot to sleep is the Vines...read more

It is very unlikely that you will visit Perth without a trip to the Swan Valley. So, when you get there, stop in at Swan Valley Tourist Information Centre for advice on the local hot spots. Tourist information centres in the areas surrounding Perth are generally run by volunteers, which means they have an extra passion for their local area. As such, you will be enthusiastically informed about all the best places to visit, the local events on, and you will be loaded up with information leaflets.

  • Elmar's in the Valley

    Description:

If you're in the Swan Valley but have a craving for beer rather than wine, then Elmar's in the Valley is an important stop for you. Elmar's is a German-style restaurant with authentic food and lots of beers - and a microbrewery on site where you can take a look at how they make their beer. There is also a bar if you're just after a drink, a small shop stocking German groceries (including chocolate!) and on weekend nights you'll often have the chance to hear some great live music.

    Description:

This German-style brewing house lies in the middle of the Swan Valley wineries. The range of beer available varies with the seasons and is brewed on-site using the traditional method in accordance with the German Law of Purity. The brewing kettles are located inside the main building of Duckstein Brewery. The food is traditional German fare but you would find some less traditional options too. The Classic Pils and the Copper Ale, brewed 100 litres at a time, are available year round. Enjoy a beer with a traditional German meal in the outdoor dining area, whilst listening to the "robotic" oompah band.

Day Note:

If you've got kids in tow, try out the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm; if not, then you might deserve a sleep-in! For lunch, head out to another winery - I can recommend Sitella which has great food and a pretty location. Save stomach space for a stop at the Margaret River Chocolate Company, where you can watch chocolates being made, sample some for free, and buy some souvenir chocolates too.

There's no better destination for chocaholics in Perth than the Swan Valley branch of the Margaret River Chocolate Factory. Featuring delicious locally-made chocolates and other delicacies, you can watch chocolates being made, do some chocolate tasting, and sit outside with a meal or just a hot chocolate. It's a great place to stop during a wine-tasting day when you feel like a break from alcohol! If you venture out of Perth to the south-west of the state, you can also visit the original factory at Margaret River.
