• Where the bastions of the papal Rocca Paolina once glowered Perugia's bastion of luxury now rises, built in 1883 by a Grand Tour guide as an inn for his English clients. It offers standardized comforts and (from most rooms) spectacular views -- some over the valley, stretching south all the way to Monte Amiata, others toward Assisi. Most accommodations are done in a modernized classic style -- or, in the newer ones, a gilded 18th-century decor to match the original marble statues in the public areas -- all with fresh carpets and wall fabrics, heavy curtains, and sparkling bathrooms with marble sinks; some have Jacuzzi tubs. The spacious two-room suites feature plush red tassled sofas and double sinks in the large bathrooms. Many rooms were refurbished in 2000 and 2001, when the Brufani seamlessly reincorporated its old sister hotel Bellavista, which occupied a wing of the building until 1999. The first-floor rooms are older and grander -- a few even have high, frescoed ceilings and the original furnishings. The public areas include grand salons of chandeliers, intricately inlaid wood floors, high coffered and stuccoed ceilings, and terraces opening to cliff-hanging views over the valley.
