What is the best location to stay to experience the real Phnom Penh?

I will recommended to stay in guest houses near Boeung Kak Lake area... when this is still the last moment to experience Phnom Penh from movies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1368443/) and books (http://www.amazon.com/Off-Rails-Phnom-Penh-Heart/dp/9748303349) before everything will finish.
Real estate project progress very fast, so 2011 maybe is the last year when you can see it and experience it on your own eyes.
Also neighborhood beyond "Japanese Friendship Bridge" on Tonle Sap river is really amazing. Don't know if there are any good hostels/guesthouses available there.

Check up the guesthouses along the Sisovath Quay. Very nice location but the price is also not cheap too because it is along the river front and near by the Nightlife as well. I caould not recommend which place to stay but please check and look for the one you like it.
