  • The Best of NileGuide
  • Phuket's nightlife is notorious for its liveliness and relaxed attitude of anything goes. Patong Beach is the most popular place for young tourists looking for a good time. Bangla Road is the main attraction on Patong, with an array of bars, nightclubs and pubs. The many 'Soi' bars (Soi Tiger, Soi Lion, Soi Vegas) are the main haunts, which each has music, dancing and great cocktails. Try to spot Thailand's ladyboys - or go see them at a show. There are nightly performances at Phuket's many ladyboy cabarets, where you won't believe your eyes as some of the prettiest men perform as women. Phuket Simon Cabaret is the most spectacular of the shows, where performers do family-friendly shows nightly. Phuket Town is more of a local haunt than a tourist attraction. The evenings here are less frenetic than Patong's all-out nightlife. However, this is a great place to meet locals and see how the Thais like to party. Similarly, Karon Beach has a more family- and couple-friendly atmosphere, ideal for those looking for a more low-key evening. While there are no nightclubs, there are plenty of small bars and pubs. There are drinking options along the beach, so you can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the water, beer in hand. Restaurant by day and bar by night, the Little Mermaid opens out onto the road in the evenings, making it perfect for lounging and people watching. For a taste of Thai culture, watch the traditional Thai form of boxing, or Muay Thai. Originally a form of street fighting, Muay Thai is now a popular local sport and takes place in rather more organized fashion. The fight starts with a ritual between the boxer and teacher, ram mauy, which is a special pre-fight dance designed for the boxer to pay his respects to his teacher. Be aware of the violent nature of the fight - this might not be the most child-friendly arena, and it is certainly not for the squeamish as injuries are common.
