Description:

  • Union Station is both a fully operational stop on Amtrak's Pennsylvanian and Capitol Limited routes, and an architectural monument with a rich history. Originally, the rotunda at its center served a dual purpose- the lower level was a sheltered space for carriages, while the second level was an elegant waiting room for passengers, with a magnificent skylight overhead. Over the years, paint was applied to the skylight and the rooms fell into relative disrepair. In the 1980's, restoration projects began to return much of the original grandeur to the station, and now both floors of the rotunda have been turned into a large open reception room, and the skylight's paint has been completely removed.
