There are a couple of trains daily between Sofia and Plovdiv. The bus station in Sofia is very close to the trian station, so you could check the time tables yourself!

There are trains from Sofia to Plovdiv. Approximately every hour. From Plovdiv you must take the bus to Smolian or Zlatograd. You will need a private coach to go to Xanthi. When you arrive in Smolyanq call me for your private coach.

The bus arrives in Plovdin and I cannot find the connections to Zlatograd. I heard the border is no longer open to cross over. How can we find this out? Thanks

Hello and welcome to Bulgaria

This link shows you Sofia central railway station http://wikimapia.org/6288373/Central-Railway-Station-Sofia when you come out of the stations main entrance look to your left and you will see the main bus and coach station here is a link to what the building looks like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Bus_Station_Sofia there are many services to Plovdiv from Sofia each day but you will find the train is slower a coach trip takes just over an hour from Sofia. Here is a link of times and prices to Plovdiv from Sofia http://www.blackseaestates.net/myfolder/Travel%20in%20bulgaria/sofia%20plovdiv%20bus%20schedule.htm I have used this service many times and find it much better than going by rail. From Plovdiv to Xanthi you can use Turkish state railways here is a link and timetable http://www.tcdd.gov.tr/tcdding/avrupa_ing.htm we have used this service before and found it good.
I hope this helps with enough details for your trip

Regards Glyn and Minka (Sofia)

Hello,

You can easily get to Plovdiv either by train or bus. I would recommend the latter as its quicker, however if you are a fan of nature's views the train's travel would definitely satisfy your hunger.
Here is the CBS website to reserve a place.http://www.centralnaavtogara.bg/
