Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum

Description:

  • In the late 19th century, Maine was home to several narrow-gauge railways, operating on rails 2 feet apart. Most of these versatile trains have disappeared, but this nonprofit organization is dedicated to preserving the examples that remain. There's a small fee for admission to the museum, which is waived if you purchase a more expensive ticket for the short ride on the little train that chugs along Casco Bay at the foot of the Eastern Promenade. Views of the islands are outstanding; the ride itself is slow-paced and yawn-inducing, but young ones probably will enjoy it. Bring the video camera.
