  • NileGuide Expert Says:

The Portland Museum of Art is a "must-see" cultural destination for those seeking the best in Portland.

  • Description:

    • The Portland Museum of Art is the largest and oldest art museum in the State of Maine. Set within a modern, spacious and well lit interior, this museum has created the best possible setting for the display of its vast collection and exhibitions. More than 17,000 works of art are owned by the museum, much of it fine and decorative pieces dating from the 18th century to the present. Special emphasis is given to those artists who worked and resided in the summer art colonies once so prevalent in Maine. In addition to paintings, there are sculptures, photographs, ceramics, glass and prints on view for the public's enjoyment. Most of the great masters from the past three to four centuries are represented here including Rockwell Kent, Andrew Wyeth, John Singer Sargent, and Frederic Edwin Church. The works of European giants such as Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Pierre-Auguste Renoir are also featured within the museum's vast collections. Plan on spending several hours within this Portland museum's walls to enjoy art throughout the ages.
