- The U.S.S. Albacore, located in Portsmouth's Albacore Park, enables visitors to get up close and personal with one of the U.S. Navy's premier experimental submarines. This submarine was utilized by the U.S. Navy for nearly three decades (1950 to 1972) for sea-going tests to determine the capabilities and design of its submarine fleet. It's landmark tear-drop shape became the standard for all nuclear submarines within the fleet. Visitors can tour nearly every part of the vessel from crew's quarters to the captain's dining room and the engine and control centers. This attraction offers a unique glimpse into navy technology that is seldom available to the public.
