Description:

  • This house, built in 1716, was the governor's mansion during the mid-18th century, when Portsmouth was the state capital. After a period as a private home, it was opened to the public in the 1930s. This stately brick structure with graceful Georgian architectural elements is a favorite among architectural historians for its wall murals (said to be the oldest murals still in place in the U.S.), early wall marbleizing, and original white pine paneling.
