Description:
The lookout tower (Petřínská rozhledna) on Petřín Hill looks much like a miniature Eiffel Tower. Built in 1891 as a celebration of the Czech lands, it initially did the trick. However, since that time it has become a topic of debate, with many people harboring serious dislike for what seems like an inferior version of Paris' main attraction. Although the exterior is the source of some resentment, the tower's purpose makes it a major tourist attraction. Set atop Petřín Hill, it takes a mere 299 steps to reach the top, where a breathtaking view awaits. It is said that on a clear day, you can see 150 km in any direction. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and offering the most comprehensive bird's eye view of the city, Petřín Observation Tower has earned its spot as one of Prague's top-ranking tourist sites.
Author note:
Day 1 keeps us in the city center, exploring the big hill of Mala Strana. Be sure to take the funicular up; it'll save some walking and it's pretty cool. Once atop, there are numerous activities to wear out the active ones. Send them running around the gardens, force them to climb the mini-Eiffel tower and challenge them to find their way out of the Mirror Maze. There are walking paths to Prague Castle from the top, so you can hit the park either on your way to or from wandering through the Castle.

Description:
Ride a cable car from street level to the top. Once up there, the Petrin Observation Tower, built in 1891 and modelled on the Eiffel Tower, affords a magnificient view. There is also an observatory and two formal gardens. At street level is a rose garden planted around a children's maze. Through a gate in the ancient wall (the Hunger Wall) lies a lush, quiet garden with a small waterfall and pond with many varieties of flowers. This is possibly one of the most idyllic spots in the city.

Description:
The Mirror Maze is in Petrin Park, near the Petrin Observation Tower. It resembles a medieval castle and has a hall of mirrors inside, to the confusion and delight of children and parents alike. The building also houses a large, realistic painting of the Czechs and Swedes battling for control of Charles Bridge in the mid 1600s.

Description:
Founded in 1931, the Prague Zoo is now one of the best in Europe, housing 5000 animals of 650 species. Among the pavilions, the Indonesian Jungle transports you into a fresh tangle of greenery and the Monkey Island allows visitors to get up close and personal with primates. Although there were problems in 2002, when a major flood killed many of the animals and destroyed zoo enclosures, the zoo has since recovered and is, again, a thriving zoological garden. But animals aren't all this zoo has to offer, it lies in a lush river valley and boasts spectacular views from atop a rocky cliff. Few city zoos offer such impressive surroundings.
Author note:
The Prague Zoo is great. Well-laid out, the animals look healthy and happy. Nearly all children like zoos, and the one in Prague will do just fine for young animal lovers. If you children are into it, you can also visit the Botanical Gardens in the same area, or wander through the gardens of the Troja Chateau (free).

Description:
Poised atop a hill, Vysehrad was the seat of Czech power for many years after its establishment in the mid-10th century. After losing its position to the Prague Castle, Vysehrad was left to fall into ruin. Now, there is still much to see in the area. The grounds form a massive and beautiful landscape, which contain the Gothic Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, the exceptionally old St. Martin Rotunda, the culturally-significant Vysehrad Cemetery, the Tabor Gate, and the ruins of a former fortification of the castle. As if that wasn't enough, an absolutely stunning view of Prague awaits here. Crumbled stone walls, gorgeous scenery, and outdoor sculpture make Vysehrad and enchanting place to visit.
Author note:
It's time for another free run. Vysehrad is one of those places overlooked by many tourists. Easily accessible via metro, the castle up on the hill offers beautiful views down the river, lots of walking paths, a church, and a fabulous cemetery. There's a good playground here as well.

Description:
This toy store in the center of the city is a welcoming spot for the whole family. The younger ones will find terrific souvenirs of Prague here. Open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm, Sunday to 6pm.
Author note:
Sometimes bribes have to be made. Sparky's is a four-story shop o' fun, stocked with both the current must-haves as well as classic Czech and wooden toys.

Eating out in Prague with children is often tough. The typical meals aren't for non-adventurous eaters and the restaurants are often smoke-and-beer-filled. For a good breakfast or lunch (or even dinner if need be) head to Bohemia Bagel. They have a kids menu and lots of food they'll recognize, plus a small children's corner. For dinner, hit Rugantino (especially their 2nd location which has a great kid's corner) for pizza.

Description:
Pizzeria Rugantino serves generous iceberg salads and the best selection of individual pizzas in Prague. Wood-fired stoves and handmade dough result in a crisp and delicate crust. The Diabolo with fresh garlic bits and very hot chiles goes nicely with a salad and a pull of beer. More spacious Rugantino II was opened at Klimentská 40, Praha 1 (tel. 224-815-192; Metro: Florenc or námestí Republiky) with children's corner and plasma TV. The constant buzz, nonsmoking area, heavy childproof wooden tables, and lots of baby chairs make this a family favorite.
