Top Prague Spots for Sports Fans

Top Prague Spots for Sports Fans

Description:

The Czech Republic is a country of sports fans whose chosen poisons are hockey and football. If you want to experience a little Czech sport culture, or if you’ve been traveling for too long and are in need of a little fix, Prague is a great place to be. Take in a live hockey game at the O2 Hockey Arena or a football game at Slavia Stadium Eden or Football Stadium Viktoria Zizkov. If there’s nothing good going on within the city limits, head to a sports bar or beer garden to feel the excitement of competition over a pint with some fellow sports fan.

The O2 Arena is the home of on of Prague's two major hockey teams: HC Slavia Praha. Until 2004, Slavia played in the tiny "Eden" arena but have been playing in the bigger, better O2 Arena (then called "Sazka Arena") since the 2004 World Ice Hockey Championship. With a capacity of 18,000, this was a huge step up for the team. In addition to hockey games, the arena hosts major concerts. • Zlata Hvezda

    Zlata Hvezda - Prague

    Description:

Located a few hundred yards from Wenceslas Square this pub is the one true sports bar in the city. The space is split into four different rooms each with its own large screen TV and each with its own program of sports events. Despite the large size, the place fills up quickly, especially during international and European football and hockey matches, and so it's worth ringing to book a table in advance. Aside from its role as a sports bar, it is also a regularly functioning pub. The friendly staff serves up a large menu of traditional Czech dishes with average prices. There are many different kinds of soup like potato soup, vegetable soup, fish soup and trip soup. You can also choose from beef in cream with dumplings, liver rice, pancakes, and desserts.

    Description:

In a city that isn't heavy on grass, this park offers wide-open spaces, a great view of Prague Castle, a kid's playground, and a massive outdoor pub. Named after a 19th-century Czech politician, Reigrovy Sady was established in the early 1900's as an English-style public garden. There isn't anything particularly English about it, but that's part of its charm. Riegrovy Sady is full of locals on any given day, as long as the weather's nice. Stroll through the greenery and enjoy the view before enjoying a fresh Gambrinus beer and maybe some grilled meat in the pub. There's even a huge screen where sports can often be watched.

A few hundred yards from Wenceslas Square, it tends to be quite popular with English-speaking expats and Czechs who gather around the central bar or on the wooden tables around it. The menu includes a mixture of Tex-Mex, traditional Czech and contemporary American dishes. The choice ranges from fried chicken wings to spicy burritos.
