  • Puebla is the fifth largest city in Mexico, and one of the most important colonial cities in the country. In 1987 Puebla's downtown was inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO because of it's beautiful architecture, it's delightful squares and it's unique urban planning. According to the legend, the city was planed by angels that visited the sixteenth century Tlaxcala bishop Julian Garces in a dream, and showed him exactly where he should build a new city. This is why Puebla is worldwide known as "City of Angels", and it sure lives up to that name. Downtown Puebla is a magnificent architectural and artistic spectacle.
Originally, the city was conceived for wealthy Spaniards who needed a place to live close enough to Mexico City and to Veracruz, the country's main port. The richness of the city reflects the wealth of its sixteenth and seventeenth century residents. Walking through downtown you'll find amazing colonial buildings, must-see museums, famous landmarks and charming squares. The Cathedral is probably the most stunning building in the city, and it's considered its heart.
But outside downtown you'll find many other things too. "Los Fuertes" are two forts used to fight the French on the now famous "Cinco de Mayo" battle, which was held (as its name implies) on may 5, 1862. They're set atop of a hill, not far from downtown, so the view of the city and the volcanos from there is priceless. Boulevard Juarez, or simply "La Juarez", is a beautiful and lively street where visitors can find all kind of restaurants and night clubs, while admiring beautiful buildings.
Just 20 minutes from Puebla is Cholula, the ancient pre-Hispanic city, with its ancient pyramid, its 37 churches and its 365 cupolas, one for each day of the year.
