Hi!
Yes, México is currently in a battle against drugs, but sometimes news can be more alarming than what it's really going on.
It all depends on where are you going, there are some places you should not go, like Ciudad Juarez, but for most of all, things are pretty much the same.
You do have to be careful, try not to walk around dark neighborhoods and always keep your bags and purse at sight. But, I honestly think this is something you have to do anywhere you go, not just Mexico.
Puerto Vallarta is pretty safe and its night life hasn't change much. Again, just be careful, try not to put yourself in dangerous situations.
I hope you enjoy your time in Mexico and enjoy the sun, the sea, the nightlife and the piña coladas in Puerto Vallarta!

Yes it is. Very safe. I have lived here for 2 years, and have never had a problem. I feel safer walking around here at 1am than I do in Vancouver. In fact, I would not attempt that in Vancouver! The stuff that I think you are seeing on the news is not in PV itslef. Like Vica said, Juarez is bad right now, and so is Monterray. Both of those places are HOURS away from here. Like anywhere you go for vacation, you have to be smart. If you wouldnt do something at home because it is illegal/unsafe/etc, don´t do it here. I think that once you get here, you will find it is a great, friendly city.

Puerto Vallarta is very safe, even at night. As long as you use the same common sense that you should use in any city, you will be fine. Do not carry or show off large amounts of money, keep an eye on your personal belongings and stick to populated, well-lit areas. Don't go off with strangers, especially for illicit activities. Like all tourist destinations in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta authorities have a strong interest in making sure that tourists have a great time and stay safe.

I was in Puerto Vallarta last summer, and in Mazatlan at Christmas time. I felt that the worst danger is the danger that seems to be everywhere; pickpockets. I saw no sign of drug wars going on while I was there, and I was between Mazatlan and Nuevo Vallarta for almost a month last year.

Puerto Vallarta is a safe city to visit. At night, travellers and locals walk downtown, oldtown, the "malecon",with their families enjoying the different performances, shows, food and attractions that this beautiful city offers.
You can find more violence in different cities around the United States but The media keep trying to put our country as a "not-to-go" destination, keeping the vacationers away from us as a way to keep the money inside the US.

I don’t think the "keeping the vacationers away from us as a way to keep the money inside the US" comment was necessary. There were ways you could express your point without that kind of statement.
