Our Local Expert Says:
During the rainy season the waterfalls are spectacular and swimming holes are abundant. Remember to bring your insect repellent, the jungle is dense behind the small beach town and mosquitoes and no-see-ems come out in full force during the night.
Description:
If you want to get an idea of what Puerto Vallarta was like in the distant past, you can hop a water taxi at Boca de Tomatlan or from the Fisherman's Pier in Puerto Vallarta to Yelapa and find out. Yelapa is only accessible by boat and only in the last few years was it connected to the local power grid. There are no cars, no massive hotel complexes or large groups of tourists here.
If you are staying for the day, hop the taxi in the morning. You can take a hike or horseback ride up to the waterfall, eat at one of few beachfront palapa-style restaurants and then spend the day sunning and swimming in the gentle waters of the cove (albeit among the fishing boats that tie up there). There are a few shops and vendors if you want to take home a souvenir and there are a few hotels/guesthouses too if you want to spend the night. The one thing you cannot miss is a giant slice of pie from the roving pie ladies of Yelapa. It's the best you've ever had.
Day Note:
Take the water taxi from Yelapa to Mismaloya.

This hotel is an all-suites property located about 10-15 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone. It hosts a very small beach and there are a variety of beach palapa-style restaurants to choose from besides the property's restaurants, but nothing else really within walking distance. It's also located on the main highway, which is unsafe for walking on.
The property will appeal to those who enjoy spending much of their vacation in their hotel and like all-inclusive properties. You can easily get to the local zoo and visit the movie set of Night of the Iguana (well, what you can reach of it since it's been closed for a while), both nearby. If you plan on spending much time in Puerto Vallarta and didn't rent a car, you will find yourself paying for some very expensive taxi rides back and forth. You can catch the bus on the highway, which is a much more affordable transportation option but may not be passing by when you want to go into town.

Description:
Mismaloya deserves the credit (although some say they deserve the blame) for the tourism boom in Puerto Vallarta. In 1963, John Huston chose this almost inaccessible, deserted beach as the set for his award winning film, The Night of the Iguana. The movie made Vallarta famous, but the set, sadly, was soon forgotten. However, Mismaloya is still worth the 6-mile drive from downtown. Not only is it a sweet little beach perfect for chilling out, it has a killer view of the famous Los Arcos sea rocks (a favorite destination for snorkelers and scuba divers). If you want to go to Los Arcos, there are plenty of boats available for hire. But before you board a boat and get too far away from the mango margaritas, consider snorkeling right off the beach where the crystal clear water is teeming with gaily painted tropical fish. There are also plenty of good restaurants competing for your business, many of them offering beach chairs and umbrellas.

The best spot for snorkeling and diving.
Description:
This is a federal underwater park that offers people the opportunity to snorkel and scuba dive in a rare environment. Many tours come out to this location and there are several spots that make it an easy dive for novice scuba divers. There are several more advanced dives in the area as well. Whether you are watching from the safety of a glass-bottomed boat or in the water snorkeling or diving, you will see hundreds of gorgeous tropical fish. They are trained to come to the surface when they hear the boat engines, hoping to get fed.
You can also great some great pictures of the local sea birds as they perch on the rocks, including the Blue-Footed Booby. On the way out, you may even run into a pack of wild dolphins. It's a magical spot and everyone should take the time to see it.

There may be more beautiful beaches in Puerto Vallarta, but Boca de Tomatlan still draws its fair share of visitors. Boca is the last beach, heading south, that is easily accessible by car, making it the de facto water-taxi gateway to Yelapa, Los Animas and Quimixto. Hikers also like Boca de Tomatlan because it has a rugged, but spectacular, hiking trail that takes you over high cliffs and past many tiny beaches, eventually dropping you off onto lovely Las Animas beach. Those who prefer an easier trip can negotiate a good price with one of the many small boats that shuttle back and forth between Yelapa, Los Animas and Boca. Snorkelers also like Boca de Tomatlan for its clear aqua waters and gentle surf. Don't worry about lugging all your gear, the local vendors will rent you whatever you need.

Description:
Puerto Vallarta is on its way to becoming one of Mexico's most important artist enclaves, representing some of Mexico's finest artists as well as international artists who now call this seaside paradise home. Already, Puerto Vallarta can claim bragging rights for having more galleries than any other Mexican seaside destination, and each year the numbers increase. The Old Town Art Walk kicks off the "Art Season" at the end of October, and runs through the end of May each year. This event, which began in 1996 with only a handful galleries, has become a much-anticipated favorite for both tourists and locals. Every season brings a few changes, but typically, fifteen to twenty galleries throw open their doors one evening each week, inviting art lovers to visit for free cocktail art expositions. Most of the galleries are located in the historic center, and within easy walking distance from each other and the main plaza. There is no fee for this event and free Art Walk brochures and gallery maps are available in most hotels, tourist information booths and restaurants.

Description:
Galleria Dante is the love-child an American/Canadian couple, Joe and Claire Guariere, who moved to Puerto Vallarta in the 80's to realize their life-long dream of supporting the arts. Their first business venture in Puerto Vallarta was a popular pizza joint on the now trendy shopping and eating street called Basilio Badillo. While the pizza was pretty good, their unique and beautiful personal art collection, brought back from visits to Europe, that adorned the walls was what really caught people's attention. Realizing they had something special to offer, they took out the pizza ovens and opened Galleria Dante, a remarkable juxtaposition of original contemporary sculptures and painting by over a hundred fresh artists (primarily Mexican). Rumors among the locals claim that if an artist can capture the interest of Galleria Dante they will most likely transition from starving artist to being a respected member of Vallarta's elite art community. New artwork comes in on a weekly basis, so even if you have visited this Gallery in the past, it is always worth a second look. Open Mon-Fri, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Description:
The stunning Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe that dominates the Puerto Vallarta skyline, is the subject of millions of photographs, and Puerto Vallarta's best known and most treasured landmark, is a must-see attraction. Each year it receives thousands of visitors, particularly during the 12-day festival celebrating the Feast of Guadalupe in December. There are guided tours daily. The original church was built over a 12 year period (1929-1941) but it was expanded and modified several times over the next 45 years.. From outside you will be enchanted by the majestic structure that is topped with a crown that is said to be a replica of a tiara once worn by the mistress of the Emperor Maxmillian. A little known fact among tourists is that the crown you see today is actually a replica of the replica. The original concrete crown was destroyed by a 7.5 earthquake in 1985. A fiberglass replacement was quickly commissioned but the material could not withstand its own weight and the crown you see today is slightly distorted. On-going fund raising efforts are in the works to restore the crown to its original state. Although you are welcome to tour the church yourself, nformation about guided tours... read more

Make sure to have a drink and some nacho's at one of the variety of bars/restaurants, and watch the pelicans dive for fish.
Description:
Returning visitors to Puerto Vallarta long for two things - that first margarita and a visit to the magnificent El Malecón (boardwalk). This beautiful, mile long oceanfront walkway, an easy walk or short car ride from most of the city's hotels, traces the beach, running parallel to the main street. The Malecon offers stunning, unobstructed views of sand and surf and is the perfect place to watch Vallarta's magical sunsets. In 2005 the Malecon was extended to link downtown with the popular Romantic Zone, giving all visitors easier access to enjoying it. Whether you are looking for shopping, dining or music - you won't be disappointed with a visit to the Malen. Don't miss the famous permanent sculptures by local artists. On Saturday nights, you are likely to see the customary Mexican "courting" ritual as teenagers walk hand-in-hand along the boardwalk, their entire family trailing two feet behind. Restaurants, bars and boutiques selling trendy clothing, silver, folk art, Cuban Cigars and tequila abound near the Malecon. If you want to dance the night away, head for the Malecon where the music begins at 11 pm and can continue to 6 a.m. the next morning

An excellent day or overnight trip. You will feel transported back in time. Pick up some local organic Nayarit coffee from the coffee roaster there.
Description:
Just a short two hour drive from Puerto Vallarta lies San Sebastian, a tiny mountain village dating back to the 17th century, when it was a prosperous silver mining town. The mines closed over one hundred years ago, but the town retains its colonial heritage and provides visitors an opportunity to experience the traditional ways of living and working in a remote Mexican village. San Sebastian remains largely unspoiled because until recently it was nearly impossible to get there on roads that were treacherous at best, and little more than donkey trails and washed out bridges at worst. In 2004 a modern highway was completed, linking San Sebastian to the Pacific coast of Mexico. Today San Sebastian is one of the most popular day trips from Puerto Vallarta. If you don't want to drive, there are many tours that will get you there safely, including a light plane excursion. As an emerging tourist destination, you will find hotels built in old haciendas, on-going festivals, great restaurants, a town square and, of course, the obligatory church for you to explore.

Great vegan and vegetarian all-you-can-eat buffets at a reasonable price.
Description:
Mexican cuisine is not, by nature, vegetarian friendly so herbivores can be hard pressed to find delicious and guaranteed lard-free dishes at local restaurants. Not so at Planeta Vegeariano! Located in Centro, this tiny "hole in the wall" restaurant offers all you can eat buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Walk in, pay for your plate and then help yourself to the two steam tables of delicious vegan and vegetarian fare. Each dish is clearly labeled and you can be sure the food is fresh.
Even if you aren't strictly vegetarian, the meat and cheese heavy Mexican diet can wear on a traveler who is used to salads and vegetables. This is a great place to eat healthy and cleanse your palate. The decor is bright and colorful, appealing to the young and young at heart. It's also very affordable, making it a great choice for those on a budget.

Description:
Winter visitors to Puerto Vallarta can count on two things - getting a great tan, and spotting a few humpback whales frolicking offshore. These magnificent creatures return to Puerto Vallata each year, drawn by its large, deep water bay and the perfect conditions it provides for breeding and calving. The "official" whale-watching season is December 8th through March 23rd, but whales don't use calendars, and it's not unusual to see a few of these great marine mammals for a few weeks before and after those dates. Whether you are walking along the Malecon or sipping a margarita at one of the charming cafes along the oceanfront, the chances are good you will see a couple of playful whales spouting and breaching against the horizon, so keep your binoculars handy. If you are afraid to leave it to chance, there are many whale-watching tours to choose from. At least one of the tours uses a light aircraft spotter plane to track the whales and then communicate the pod's location to the boat's captain. Many visitors choose a trip to the Marieta islands, one of the most beautiful marine reserves in the region, by renting a kayak or taking a boat cruise, which combines whale watching, swimming,... read more

A local favorite featuring authentic and fresh Mexican food.
Description:
Cafe de Olla is a local favorite and regular haunt for expats living in the Romantic Zone. It's usually busy, especially in the morning because they serve delicious breakfasts (including cafe de olla, a Mexican spiced coffee from which the restaurant gets its name). Here you will find generous portions of authentic Mexican food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's located right in the Romantic Zone, near the beach so you can stroll to the water after or along the quaint shops or street vendors in the area. There's sidewalk seating for great people watching too.
During busy times of the day and especially in high season, you may have to wait for a table. Once seated, the tortilla soup is highly recommended. If you want a margarita, definitely try the raicilla version. Raicilla is a local liquor, similar to tequila but with a distinctive taste.
